While prepared baby food only represents a niche category in India, with increasing urbanisation and awareness as well as consumers resuming busy and active lifestyles post-pandemic, demand is expected to increase due to the convenience the products offer. Prepared baby foods such as purées and other ready-to-eat foods often come in squeezable flexible plastic containers with screw-top closures.
In 2022, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a draft notification that would bring baby food manufacturing under the remit of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Baby food producers will need to obtain BIS certification and print it on their packaging in order to continue selling baby food in the country.
