In 2021, home care packaging unit volumes decreased slightly, following the strong growth registered in 2020, when the pandemic first arrived in the Netherlands. People were out and about more in 2021, after the 2020 lockdowns, and there was reduced demand for home care items.
Owing to the easing of mobility restrictions in 2021, people were spending more time away from their homes in this year than they had done a year earlier. As a result, dishwashing packaging unit volumes were stagnating in 2021.
In 2021, air care continued to perform well, despite people being out and about a lot more than in 2020, and therefore spending less time at home. This was because many consumers had got into the habit of purchasing air care products.
As sustainability is gaining significance consumers in the Netherlands are increasingly looking for Ecolabel or Ecocert certification on their products, with businesses often being appraised on whether they have such certification. For example, as a result of the increased focus on the environment, niche companies like Seepje are gaining market share.
As a member of the EU, the Netherlands has seen the introduction, from 1 January 2021, of a tax of EUR0.80 per kilogramme on non-recycled plastic packaging waste.
