As people were forced to stay at home and not allowed to dine-in at foodservice outlets due to government restrictions for much of 2020, dishwashing recorded dynamic growth in this year as consumers were cooking and eating more at home. However, in 2021, when people were allowed to dine-in at restaurants for most of the year, and many people were tired of staying at home and were eager to eat out, this resulted in a significant decline in home cooking and therefore also in a fall in demand for dishwashing products.
Many people panic-bought bleach in 2020, as it was claimed to be able to kill the virus, while, in addition, stocks of other products for disinfecting the home were depleted as fears of supply shortages caused people to stockpile items such as surface care products. However, in 2021, people were less inclined to panic-buy as the pandemic eased, and as they realised that bleach was not necessary to keep their households safe.
Home insecticides saw a surge in demand in 2020 as people spent more time at home, but then declined in 2021 as the government took measures to address the dengue problem in the country. As a result, packaging volumes of key pack types used for these products, such as metal aerosol cans, rose in 2020 but declined in 2021.
Demand for shoe polish declined notably in Singapore in 2020 and 2021, as people were working from home more and had less use for shoe polish due to reduced office visits and fewer social occasions. This had a negative impact on the pack types used in shoe polish, such as HDPE bottles, metal tins and other rigid containers.
On a global level, lots of manufacturers are moving towards sustainability, with creating more sustainable packaging a primary goal among most. In recent years, big manufacturers such as SC Johnson, Unilever and Colgate-Palmolive have signed the New Plastic Economy Global Commitment by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to stop plastic from becoming waste.
