Spectacles was hit harder than contact lenses in 2020, due to the closure of shopping malls and associated pandemic restrictions leading to a decline in optical appointments and thus fewer prescriptions for new spectacles or lens replacements. Unlike contact lenses, which can easily be ordered online, spectacles need to be tried on and correctly fitted.
During the event of COVID-19 in 2020, fashion frames suffered a sharp decline. This resulted in spectacle frames seeing the steepest drop in sales that year, but also the strongest rebound in 2021.
JZO Sp zoo is maintaining its narrow lead in the fragmented category of spectacles in 2021, as the only named player holding double-digit shares and the largest share under “others”. The overall leading player’s namesake brand, JZO, also tops spectacle lenses, with Safilo (from Optimex Sp zoo) topping spectacle frames, and Conti Glass (from Conti Glass III sc) leading readymade reading glasses.
The spectacles industry, despite the slowdown associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, has very good prospects ahead. The main factors driving the increase in the demand for spectacles will be the rapidly aging population and the steady increase in the number of patients with vision problems.
The online channel will continue to grow over the forecast period. Consumers have become accustomed to buying in e-commerce shops, and the pandemic only intensified this trend.
A strong rebound towards the reclaiming of individual styles is expected over the forecast period which, in turn, will reflect in fashion frames and individualisation of frames and lenses, as well as personal specialisations. Progressive lenses which can correct both myopia and farsightedness will become more popular, for example as seen with Seiko Brilliance progressive eyeglass lenses.
