The spectacles market in South Africa has experienced limited growth in 2021. In addition to the impact COVID-19 has had on demand, consumers continue to experience high levels of unemployment and financial constraints in a challenging economy.
However, the majority of consumers continue to work from home, and this has come with a need to constantly spend time on digital devices, such as computers. The same applies to younger children who are spending the majority of their time on mobile phones and computers, given limited social activity.
Prior to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the spectacles category was experiencing slow growth as quality spectacles remained inaccessible to most low-income consumers. Despite the need for better vision, spectacles remained expensive for most.
Demand for readymade reading glasses remains, as most poorer consumers continue to find prescription glasses unaffordable. Although growth in sales was impacted by consumers’ inability to visit stores during lockdown, consumers are now able to make purchases once again as business has resumed.
High levels of dependency on digital devices is encouraging demand for blue light spectacle lenses. The majority of consumers are still working from home, and the majority of students have been attending online classes since 2020.
Leading companies such as Essilor SA (Pty) Ltd, Hoya Hill Optics (Pty) Ltd and Luxottica South Africa Pty Ltd continue to enjoy customer loyalty in 2021. This is attributed to their wide product availability and distribution in optical shops nationwide.
