The lingering health and economic threats of Coronavirus (COVID-19) remain factors in the performance of spectacles in Sweden in 2021. Swedish consumers, particularly people in at-risk demographics, continue to limit their trips outside the home, including to retail stores, in order to reduce the potential for contact with others and the risk of infection.
With little or no real adaptation to the effects of COVID-19 on the industry, the media, manufacturers and retailers of consumer optics and eye health doctors have increasingly focused on the rapidly increasing rates of myopia in younger demographics. This is generally believed to be caused by much higher and more widespread exposure to digital devices, such as computer and smartphone screens.
The interest in and adaptation to new sustainability and local-made trends is an exception to the generally stagnant tendencies within the category. In particular, larger players have started to notice and adapt to the general growth in interest in sustainability in the market.
Previously, spectacles, as a category, has been largely characterised by stability, demographically-driven demand growth and a general lack of interest in genuine innovation. This is partly because spectacles are perceived as necessity functional products that virtually sell themselves.
As a result, the category appears to be coming under increasing structural pressure, which provides room for smaller, more agile and more innovative players, such as Taberg Basecamp. Taberg Basecamp is one of very few domestic Swedish makers of spectacles.
However, innovation is initially expected to remain relatively low, with few adaptations to take advantage of the potential of such positive trends. During 2021, companies have made renewed efforts to push subscription-based consumption models.
