Having accelerated to a seven-year high in 2020 due to the pandemic, which led local consumers to eat more meals and snacks at home, the rate of growth in retail volume sales of staple foods in Kuwait more than halved during 2021 as daily life began to normalise. Bread dominates retail volume sales of staple foods, with rice accounting for most of the remainder, but the most dynamic categories during the latter part of the review period were pasta and processed meat.
Having accelerated modestly in 2020 as a result of the pandemic, which led to increased consumption of baked goods at home, the rate of growth in retail volume sales of baked goods slowed during 2021. The fact that the population of Kuwait declined for the first time in almost 30 years during the year due to the economic shock of the pandemic played a significant role in this slowdown.
Consumers tend to eat three main meals, and snacking is common among people of all socioeconomic levels. Breakfast often consists of sandwiches and pies with various fillings, including eggs, falafel, fava beans and cheese.
The Kuwaiti economy had been in recession even before the onset of the pandemic, but real GDP contracted at close to a double-digit rate during 2020, amid a sharp decline in the price of crude oil (the country’s main export) driving this. As the global economy stabilised, real GDP began to rebound in 2021.
There are no infrastructure problems in Kuwait, with all types of retailers accessible by road or by foot. There are many retailers that range in size from small corner stores to large hypermarkets.
There will be moderate growth in retail volume sales of staple foods during the forecast period, with population growth the main driver of this.
