Contact lenses and solutions is bouncing back in 2021, after all sub-categories fell into negative figures in 2020 due to impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, however, sales of contact lenses have fared better than sales of spectacles, and all sub-categories are seeing healthy growth in 2021.
Players have needed to adapt quickly to the changed operating environment during the time of the pandemic, and not all businesses have survived. In the wake of the third wave of the pandemic in spring 2021, the government in Poland introduced another lockdown and closed shopping malls.
Johnson & Johnson Poland Sp zoo is maintaining its company lead in contact lenses in 2021, holding a small margin over second-placed The Cooper Cos Inc, who holds a small margin over third-placed Alcon Polska Sp zoo. In brand terms, however, the dynamic is switched, with Cooper Cos’ Biofinity brand in the lead, followed by Alcon’s Air Optix, and with Johnson & Johnson’s 1-Day Acuvue in third place.
The stronger sales seen in 2021 are expected to continue in 2022, before figures slightly fall back to historic norms. However, the success of sales overall will depend on the strength of consumers’ spending power and how quickly the country is able to return to pre-pandemic lifestyles, with recovery in the economy.
Whilst sales have successfully switched to online channels during the time of the pandemic, it has been more challenging for first-time contact lens wearers. When consumers start wearing contact lenses for the first time, they typically consult an optician to help them select the right type.
Daily disposable (DD) lenses will continue to be the most popular options for contact lens wearers over the forecast period. The sub-category is consistently seeing the strongest sales, alongside the least steep declines in 2020.
