Following advice from the World Health Organisation (WHO) regarding the fact that COVID-19 can be transmitted through the eyes, many people have been reticent about touching their eyes and are thus selecting spectacles over contact lenses. There is a belief that wearing contact lenses, and especially those which are reusable, is less hygienic and will potentially put people at risk of catching the COVID-19 virus; whereas wearing spectacles will offer some form of protection against the virus, as spectacles provide an eye shield of sorts.
Social distancing measures and working from home regulations are also reducing the need for contact lenses, as people are less concerned about their appearances. Therefore, there is a decline in cosmetic contact lenses as well as optical-purpose contact lenses, whereby people are finding it easier to simply wear spectacles at home.
Johnson & Johnson Indonesia PT continued to lead contact lenses in 2019, with over half the total retail value share in company terms, thanks to its leading Acuvue Oasys brand (in addition to its other Acuvue products). The global player has no close contenders, with the only other players of note being CooperVision Inc (with its SoftVue and Biomedics brands) and Ciba Vision Batam PT (with its Freshlook and Air Optix brands).
