Like other categories in the luxury goods market, fine wines/Champagne and spirits saw negative growth in 2019 as a result of the extended period of social unrest; however, the downturn was less marked than in other categories. Increasing demand for fine wines among mainlanders drives the performance of Hong Kong’s fine wines environment.
Demand for whiskey has grown, and is set to demonstrate continued momentum. Japanese whiskies are gaining popularity among local buyers in Hong Kong, a trend that began after a Japanese TV series – Massan – which tells the story of the ‘Father of Japanese Whisky’.
The appetite for new regions is rising, as Hong Kong consumers are often well-travelled and well-versed in regions abroad. They are also more eager to try products from new wine regions.
Moët Hennessy Diageo Hong Kong Ltd consolidated its leading position in the category in 2018, with a marked value share gain. The company offers popular brands including Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin and Dom Pérignon in fine Champagne, Hennessy XO in luxury brandy and cognac, and the well-known Johnnie Walker brand in luxury whiskies.
Also under the Moët Hennessy Diageo Hong Kong Ltd umbrella, the Scotch whisky brand Johnnie Walker organised a pop-up event – “Johnnie Walker Neon Light Highball Party” – in Central Hong Kong, celebrating the newly launched Black Label Highball flavours. It attracted a lot of attention as it featured the iconic Old Hong Kong street view, aimed at provoked nostalgic sentiments.
Chivas Regal (Pernod Ricard Hong Kong Ltd) launched a new packaging, namely the “Blending Kit” in Hong Kong at the beginning of 2019. The kit contains six small miniature whiskies, and consumers can enjoy the process of blending their own flavour based on the instructions.
