The lifting of the country’s final COVID-19 restrictions in early 2022 fuelled a new positive wave of consumption among Dutch consumers who were eager to spend more time outside and celebrate with premium drinks, including fine wines/Champagne and spirits. With the current rise in food and energy prices it is likely that home consumption will remain a common habit in the Netherlands as more people look to restrict their spending, with alcoholic drinks being considerably more expensive through the on-trade channel.
While Dutch consumers are willing to buy premium and super premium products, they remain price sensitive and are often willing to search various distribution channels to find the best possible price deal. E-commerce emerged as the most dynamic distribution channel towards the end of the review period as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The release of special editions and the use of modern communication tools such as social media are elements that are increasingly being used by the main manufacturers to encourage brand awareness, build excitement and trigger curiosity. For example, Diageo Nederland BV launched a special edition line of luxury whiskies under its Johnnie Walker brand called Blue Label Year of the Tiger in early 2022 to celebrate Chinese New Year.
