Luxury whiskies has continued to display dynamic growth in current value terms in 2018 thanks to the popularity of Japanese premium whiskies among tourists visiting Japan. Nevertheless, domestic appreciation of luxury whiskies has also been growing, partly off the back of the growing attention being paid to Japanese whiskies.

Possible new market for luxury gin and vodka

As luxury whiskies continues to record strong growth, supply shortages are becoming an issue. As a result, alternatives are beginning to emerge in the market.

Fine wines and Champagne compete with affordable alternatives

Over the review period, Japanese wine continued to grow in popularity, with this expected to be boosted by new wine legislation for producers of Nihon wine (wine made entirely from domestically grown grapes). As from October 2018 producers have to indicate the place of production, type of grape and year of harvest on the label of Nihon wine.

Asahi Shuzo witnessed the most dynamic growth in current value terms in 2017 with its Dassai brand of premium sake seeing a year-on-year increase in its value share since 2014. The company has managed to grow the brand by offering limited edition ranges as well as introducing innovative pop-up bars to help build brand awareness.

Internet retailing on the rise
