Local trade sources have more concerns about the outlook for the local consumption of standard still wines than for premium wines (other fine wine). As in the past, French consumers will probably continue to drink less but better, and will remain fond of traditional local cooking and wine, driven by the locavore trend and the need for authenticity.
In spirits, the main trends driving growth have been the aspiration for old traditional and mainly exotic spirits in 2021-2022, and the interest in Japanese whisky and old flavoured rums due to increasingly sophisticated mixology is not likely to fade away soon. However, the most dynamic in terms of percentage growth could be “new” local premium spirits, due to the increasing interest in locally-made products, even within spirits that traditionally come from other countries.
The amazing rebound in sales of fine champagne in 2021-2022 does not only contrast with their logical drop in 2020, but also with their pre-pandemic performance. Before 2020, sales in this category were dampened by the competition from Italian and Portuguese bubbly wines, and a paradox.
