Executive Summary

Feb 2019
PROSPECTS
Fine wines and champagne continue to penetrate the market, but remain niche

Affluent consumers are getting used to the idea of consuming luxury wine or champagne during fine dining or at occasions or parties. Although this change in mindset could be attributed to the fact that more people are travelling abroad for work or studies, people are also being influenced by films, blogs, social media platforms and culinary shows.

Vineyards help consumers to learn more about wines

Several vineyards were established in India over the last few years; for example, by Moët Hennessy India, which sells champagne under its Chandon brand. These vineyards continue to attract more affluent and aspirational consumers every year, who are keen to learn more about wines, resulting in the continued growth of fine wine and champagne.

High import duties and offshore purchases adversely impact sales

India is amongst the largest imposers of customs duties on imports of fine wines/champagne and spirits. This deters the already developed clientele and aspirational customers alike from making purchases in the country.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Chivas Regal 18 YO from Pernod Ricard India is the leading brand

Chivas Regal 18 YO, a blended Scotch whisky, is one of Pernod Ricard India’s brands. It led fine wines/champagnes and spirits in the country in retail value terms in 2017, although with a small share due to the fragmentation in the category.

Diageo India remains the leading company

Despite Pernod Ricard India holding the leading brand in 2017, Diageo India maintained its lead in company terms. The company has a wide brand portfolio, mainly in whiskies, although it also has a presence in vodka with Ciroc.
