Consumers concentrate on design driving growth for built-in appliances

Large cooking appliances is seeing more moderate volume growth in 2018 in comparison to the previous year. To a great extent this is to do with the slowdown seen in the construction industry resulting from a dip in consumer confidence with regard to buying a new home.

New technologies lead to an increase in the average unit price

Demand for ventilation systems continues to grow in 2018 as a way to remove the pollutants and humidity that is generated when cooking, with this being supported by the trend towards apartment living or smaller living spaces. The choice between built-in and freestanding cooker hoods is based on the consumer’s taste or style rather than the performance of the product, with the only requirement being that it is placed over the cooker hob considering this is the primary source of odours, grease, and moisture.

Connectivity and innovation are limited

Technology and connectivity is a key factor in almost every major appliance. Innovation for this category at a conventional level is focused on saving gas/electricity in order to attract consumers of all income segments as well as different burner designs in terms of shape and size to achieve better heat distribution.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Shares in large cooking appliances remain highly consolidated

HACEB, Mabe, Challenger and Centrales account for most volume sales within large cooking appliances. These brands benefit from a wide distribution reach via key chains of electronics and appliance specialist retailers, with an offer that covers all price points, including entry level cookers in the case of HACEB and Mabe.

Domestic brands strengthen their position

Domestic player Industria de Electrodomésticos SA has continued to increase its presence within cooker hoods, cookers and built-in hobs in 2018. Seeing the potential of the market, the company has centred the distribution of its Abba brand in the fastest-growing channels.
