After a couple of years of negligible retail volume growth for large cooking appliances, in 2020 the category saw a significant double-digit decline. Most products within large cooking appliances are built-in models.
Mainly as a result of the desire to minimise the time spent on cleaning around the home, some consumers are turning to induction hobs, because they are easy to keep clean. A gradual rise in the share of induction hobs was therefore seen throughout the review period.
Rinnai Corp remained the leading player in large cooking appliances in retail volume terms in 2020, followed by Fuji Industrial. Whilst the clear leader in the largest category, built-in hobs, was Rinnai Corp, Fuji Industrial led the second-largest category of cooker hoods.
Towards the end of 2020, Fujioh released a new cooker hood, the SER-ECC-751/901 series, which senses the CO2 level, and once the level surpasses a certain threshold, the product automatically turns on and starts ventilating the room. This function fits well with consumers’ rising concerns about air quality, which increased due to COVID-19, with people focusing more on the quality of the air and ventilation in their homes.
After seeing a very poor retail volume performance in 2020 due to COVID-19, a rapid recovery is not expected for large cooking appliances in 2021, unlike some other consumer appliances categories. Decline is therefore set to continue, although at a slower pace.
Nevertheless, as newly built houses are becoming too expensive, especially in Tokyo, existing houses in urban areas are expected to attract more investment in the forecast period. The amount of money spent on the remodelling and renovation of houses will thus increase, as each family will want to create a home which fits their needs perfectly.
In terms of the potential entry of new foreign players in large cooking appliances, this is unlikely. Legislation relating to product safety presents a significant barrier to foreign companies entering large cooking appliances in Japan.
