High inflation is expected to continue putting pressure on disposable incomes in Finland and across Europe throughout 2023 and into 2024 whilst also pushing up the prices charged for lodging as category players face higher operating costs and squeezed margins. This situation however is likely to apply more to leisure tourism than business travel, while domestic tourists are more likely to want to reduce the cost of lodging than inbound arrivals, especially those arriving on long-haul routes from Asia.
One of the key domestic tourism trends in Finland during the COVID-19 pandemic was the huge shift seen towards campsites, with caravanning in particular seen as a relatively economical way to travel, mainly due to the low cost of renting a pitch in a campsite in comparison with staying in a hotel or hostel. Caravanning and camping also have reputation for giving travellers considerable freedom and this appealed to the many Finnish people who wanted to discover their own country with outbound travel severely restricted or, in many cases impossible during 2020 and for much of 2021.

Lodging (Destination)
Lodging (Destination) covers the main types of lodging used by inbound and domestic tourists, providing a destination point of view (also known as point of supply). Lodging value is measured in terms of the price paid for lodging by the consumer and businesses based on total room sales. It does not include food and drinks or any other form of revenue that is not directly related to lodging, such as events and conferences and guest services, such as gym, spa, shop, room service, restaurant and café. Lodging volume is measured in terms of number of outlets and rooms at year end, and room nights as total of the full year.
