Lodging in Peru was hit hard by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, from significant losses in income through to the closure of several establishments due to decreased demand during this time (from both domestic and foreign travellers). Budget and lower-category establishments suffered the most, in addition to uncategorised lodgings and campsites, thus registering the highest proportion of closures.
Short-term rental lodging still has a very small presence in Peru. However, pre-pandemic, short-term rentals were starting to attract more attention due to their low-cost offers and the ability to accommodate large numbers of travellers.
Lodging services are expected to recover towards the end of the forecast period, in line with recovery in tourism and travel overall. It is expected that recovery will include the reopening of some establishments which were closed during the time of the pandemic, alongside the opening of new lodging services, to a degree similar to that seen pre-pandemic.
It is expected that short-term rentals, such as Airbnb, will bounce back over the forecast period, also in line with recovery in tourism overall. In fact, such establishments are expected to further increase their shares due to being able to offer lower prices.
