Trends towards naturalness and the organic continued to be a key driver of growth in beauty and personal care in 2019, with consumers showing an increased interest in environmental friendliness and product safety. Products carrying labels declaring natural ingredients proliferated during the review period, partly as a result of media reports emphasising toxicity risks and potential adverse effects of some of the synthetic chemicals often found in beauty and personal care products.
2019 saw increased interest in large pack sizes, particularly within bath and shower and hair care. Several leading players launched new products in larger formats, including Unilever, International Consumers Products Co Ltd and Procter & Gamble.
Demand for small packets and travel-sized formats increased towards the end of the review period, as both domestic and international tourism boomed in Vietnam. Smaller formats in bath and shower products and hair care products, in particular, proved popular, with flexible aluminium plastic and HDPE bottles of 170g/ml appealing to both individuals and families.
The impact of COVID-19 on beauty and care packaging is mainly being seen in substantial rises in some categories due to stockpiling and panic buying, which, along with ongoing hygiene concerns, are supporting healthy overall growth despite reduced demand in several product areas. Most categories are doing well and recording positive growth in 2020.
Overall growth in beauty and personal care packaging will continue to rise in 2020-21, with almost all categories gaining pace. Healthy growth is predicted to be maintained throughout the forecast period.
