Overall eyewear in Hong Kong shows greater signs of recovery in 2023, following low growth rates in 2022. The Hong Kong government gradually eased social restrictions from the second half of 2022 into early 2023.
Sales of contact lenses and solutions continue to grow in 2023, with the category experiencing a further rebound following the declines of 2020. Greater socialising occasions following the easing of pandemic restrictions continue to drive demand for contact lenses.
Johnson & Johnson, Bausch & Lomb, and CIBA Vision (HK) Ltd continued to lead contact lenses in 2022. The rising myopia and presbyopia population, as well as the gradual easing of restrictions over the year, supported their sales.
During the pandemic, local consumers became accustomed to the convenience of online shopping. According to Euromonitor International’s Voice of the Consumer: Lifestyle Survey 2022, 40% of global respondents claimed that they shopped online to save time.
Eyewear in Hong Kong is set to record further growth over the forecast period, although compared to 2021-2022, this is likely to gradually slow. Nevertheless, both retail volume and value sales (at constant 2023 prices) are set to fully recover to pre-pandemic levels by 2025.
