Eyewear in 2021: The big picture
The eyewear market in Romania was significantly negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. However, most of the categories are showing signs of full recovery during 2021.

Even though the pandemic has diminished purchasing power among consumers, items such as corrective spectacles and contact lenses have not had as big a fall in sales to recover from compared with less essential products such as readymade reading glasses and sunglasses. Demand for contact lenses is being driven by the move towards daily disposable lenses, which could already be seen before the pandemic.
Competitive landscape
Eyewear distributors and retailers were significantly affected during March-May 2020 when the country was in complete lockdown. Most eyewear retailers did not sell anything during those months, as their e-commerce platforms were not very well equipped to handle the huge switch to online shopping.
Retailing developments
E-commerce in eyewear soared in 2020 amid home seclusion and has huge potential for further gains in Romania. However, current regulations and the general availability of eyewear products, especially contact lenses and solutions, make it difficult for consumers to shop online.
What next for eyewear?
