The strong growth seen in eyewear in Romania in 2019 was the product of two major trends. The first is the improving economic situation in the country, which has resulted in the financial situations of many households improving considerably.
While demand factors in eyewear are still dominated by the need for corrective lenses, 2019 saw fashion trends become much more influential in spectacle frames and sunglasses. With Romanians increasingly exposed to the prevailing global fashion trends through the online, social and broadcast media, they are becoming increasingly aware that sunglasses and spectacles are also fashion items, as well items to correct and protect one’s vision.
October 2018 saw the long-awaited merger between Europe’s twin global eyewear giants Luxottica and Essilor after EU regulatory approval was granted in March 2018. Luxottica is the global leader in spectacle frames and sunglasses with iconic brands such as Oakley and Ray-Ban.
2019 saw optical shops remain the dominant distribution channel for eyewear in Romania. The main reason for this is that consumers tend to appreciate the professional assistance and advice provided by the sales staff in these specialist stores.
The outlook for eyewear is overwhelmingly positive and this is mainly due to the ongoing improvements being seen in the Romanian economy and in particular rising disposable income levels. This means that more Romanians will be able to spend more on their eyewear, including more pairs of spectacles and sunglasses and more expensive items that are as fashionable as they are functional.
