In 2021, gardening has seen exponential growth in current value sales, although growth rates in current terms are exaggerated by inflation and exchange rate issues, it has delivered solid growth in both 2020 and 2021 in real terms as a result of the pandemic, following successive years of value decline.
Nurseries are a key sales channels for all gardening products, but notably horticulture, pots and growing media. Leading players in this channel have adapted rapidly to new consumer trends, developing different strategies to drive sales and meet new consumer needs.
Horticulture, which is set to generate almost a fifth of gardening revenues in 2021, is characterized by a high degree of informality, reflecting the highly fragmented nature of the country’s horticulture industry and the very wide variety of products that it produces. For the last 100 years, the cultivation and commercialisation of flowers and ornamental plants has been operated by around 1,800 producing families across the country.
Gardening is set to deliver sustained positive growth over the forecast period, driven by the surge in consumer interest in gardening, and the anticipated rise in number of new homes. The pandemic has led many consumers to focus on domestic improvements, and a garden, or even houseplants and window boxes are now desired by many younger Argentinians.
Domestically produced lawn brands, like Petri SA’s Petri are anticipated to start rebuilding value share over the forecast period. These products are typically cheaper, and as consumer price sensitivity remain high in the aftermath of the pandemic, their competitive prices should deliver more sales.
Although nurseries, home improvement and gardening stores will remain the key distribution channel for gardening, e-commerce is set to grow over the forecast period. Online sales of indoor plants and seeds are expected to strengthen in particular, as demand among the urban consumer base that is the main buyer if these products rises.
