Therefore, using a soundbar as a complimentary sound system is becoming increasingly common in Hong Kong, positioned as providing virtual surround sound and requiring only minimal space, and fitting well into the small size of many local apartments.
Wireless speakers such as Bluetooth are replacing the need to purchase audio separates and hi-fi systems. This technology offers the listener higher quality in addition to a smaller footprint within the home and its lower cost compared to a higher initial investment in an entire audio system, while the latter can take up significant room in the average Hong Kong apartment.
Electronics and appliance specialists continued to be the dominant distribution channel for home audio and cinema in Hong Kong in 2019. Although internet retailing continued to record some gain in retail volume share for this category, local consumers appreciate being able to visit a physical shop to experience the sound quality of home audio and cinema products before committing to such a large purchase.

While leading brands such as Sony, LG and Philips enjoy a strong presence in leading distribution channel electronics and appliance specialist retailers in Hong Kong, there is also room for audio products from a limited number of smaller brands such as Marantz, Cambridge Audio and Denon under “others”, with the latter continuing to gaining retail volume share in addition to recording positive volume sales growth. Brands such as these offer accessible entry-level audio separates and speakers, and a lower-cost alternative to long-standing leading brands.
