Music streaming is taking root in Japan. According to the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ), annual sales of music streaming overtook those of music downloads for the first time in 2018 – though sales of physical audio records (including CDs) continued to amount to more than 240% the size of digital music sales.
While digital music and streaming are growing strongly in popularity, there is also a notable trend to switching back to analogue music. In response to the rise of vinyl record production, Tower Records, one of the largest media product store chains in Japan, has begun selling vinyl records in an in-store shop, Tower Vinyl, in one of its eponymous stores.
Soundbars are becoming increasingly important in home cinema and speaker systems. Sales of soundbars have been bolstered by consumers’ growing demand for enhanced visual and sound quality when viewing TV.
Onkyo & Pioneer Corp overtook Sony Corp to gain the lead in home audio and cinema in 2019. The final year of the review period saw Onkyo agree a deal to sell its home audio and cinema business to US company, Sound United LLC, which already owned the Denon, Polk Audio, Marantz, Definitive Technology, HEOS, Classé and Boston Acoustics brands.
The Japanese home audio and cinema category is seeing major new players enter from overseas. Amazon launched its Echo Link and Echo Link Amp products in the market at the end of the review period, as it sought to tap into the growing popularity of music streaming.
Yamaha, the fourth largest player in home audio and cinema, continued to gain share in 2019 on the back of the strong growth in demand for soundbars. Soundbars are becoming the mainstream products in home cinema and speaker systems.
