Kuwait’s economy proved resilient in the face of the global oil price slump and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. Demand for cooking ingredients and meals remains high among the country’s affluent population, although growing concern over high obesity rates have led many consumers to adopt healthier diets, including eating less overall.
Cooking ingredients and meals recorded healthy sales growth in 2021 as demand continued to be driven by the strict approach taken to social distancing and home seclusion within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. With consumers either unable or unwilling to dine out due to regulations requiring consumer foodservice businesses to remain closed as a way of preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus among the population and widespread fears of contagion, sales growth across all categories of cooking ingredients and meals was driven mainly by the requirement to prepare meals from scratch at home using fresh ingredients.
Those living in Kuwait tend to eat three main meals per day, while snacking is also common among people of all socioeconomic levels. Breakfast often consists of sandwiches and/or pies with various fillings, including egg, falafel, fava beans and cheese.
The group of packaged food items that are considered essential in Kuwait includes edible oils. The price of essential food for local consumers is subsidised by almost 100%, meaning that local people essentially pay almost nothing for their edible oils.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Commerce and Industry enacted a series of measures designed to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus among the country’s population. These measures have targeted all players in the consumer foodservice and retail industries.
Cooking ingredients and meals is expected to continue performing well over the forecast period, despite any lingering negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kuwait’s economy is likely to continue recovering during the forecast period, with the resurgence in global oil prices set to support a strong recovery for the national economy in the post-pandemic era.
