2022 saw rising retail volume and value sales across virtually all categories of cooking ingredients and meals in Uzbekistan, with only rare exceptions to this being seen. Demand is still rising despite strong price inflation as high inflation has swept across central Asia in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and as a result of the Ukraine conflict, a situation which has piled huge pressure on household spending, resulting in lower growth in consumption.
Edible oils continued to record positive volume growth during 2022 despite substantial price inflation and supply chain issues as a result of the Ukraine conflict. Sunflower oil is the most popular type of edible oil in Uzbekistan and the supply of this important commodity foodstuff is dependent on imports.
While international players maintain a very strong presence in most categories of cooking ingredients and meals, local players are gaining ground as the cost of importation increases and local manufacturing operations expand and become more sophisticated. This means that domestic manufacturers are making a mark even in the most import-dependent categories such as sunflower oil, with government efforts to support local production and reduce reliance on imports crucial to the success of local players.
Modern grocery retailing is gaining ground in Uzbekistan as the country’s few supermarket chains expand their outlet footprints across Tashkent and into as yet untapped parts of the country. Nonetheless, small local grocers remains heavily dominant in the distribution of all categories of cooking ingredients and meals.
Further positive growth is expected to be seen in sales of cooking ingredients and meals during the forecast period as population growth and spreading affluence among the low-income majority present the ideal pre-conditions for a strong performance in many categories. In particular, Uzbekistan’s high birth rate, even in comparison with neighbouring countries in Central Asia, presents huge opportunities to companies that are able to expand their operations in line with rising demand.
