Sales growth rates remained stable and predictable in most categories of cooking ingredients and meals during 2022 as the industry essentially returned to normality after an extended period of recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic during 2021. Apart from price inflation putting significant pressure on demand, especially in categories that are seen as non-essential, there were few external factors that exerted any major influence on growth trends in the vast majority of categories.
During 2022, the Ukraine conflict caused major interruptions to the supply of products and crucial ingredients in the two most important categories of edible oils in Lithuania, rapeseed oil and, in particular, sunflower oil. Ukraine is one of the leading suppliers of sunflower oil to Lithuania and it is also a major exporter of rapeseed oil.
Spanish brands remain prominent among the leading names in olive oil. However, the high inflation that was seen in Lithuania during the first half of the year led to strong growth in the average unit price of olive oil and this narrowed the price gap between economical Spanish brands and their more expensive Italian and Greek equivalents.
No major changes were seen in the retail distribution of cooking ingredients and meals in 2022 as supermarkets, hypermarkets, convenience stores and discounters continued to account for more than three-quarters of total value sales across the industry. The vast majority of sales are these sales are generated by major chained retailers such as Maxima, Rimi, Iki and Lidl.
Sales across cooking ingredients and meals are expected to increase moderately during the forecast period, with the current favourable background situation and trends set to remain in effect. Consumer purchasing power is set to continue increasing consistently, mitigating the impact of high inflation.
