Demand continued to increase across most categories of cooking ingredients and meals in 2022 despite significant average unit price increases as high inflation eroded consumer spending power. General economic development, urbanisation and the spread of chained supermarkets and hypermarkets are among the most important reasons for rising sales, with consumers increasingly favouring products that offer convenience as the pace of life accelerates, especially for those living in major urban areas.
The unit prices of many of the products classified under cooking ingredients and meals increased substantially over the course of 2021 and 2022, a situation which motivated the government to cap prices in some categories and enact legislation to impose control upon retailers to ensure that price caps were adhered to. The most popular categories that this situation applied to include edible oils and tomato pastes/purées, which are widely considered to be essential cooking ingredients in all households through the country.
There were no significant changes seen in the eating and cooking habits of Ivoirian consumers during 2022. Low-income consumers tend to eat one or two main meals per day, while middle- and high-income consumers usually eat at least three main meals per day, as well as snacks.
Palm oil is the most popular type of edible oil in Côte d’Ivoire and it is heavily consumed by most of the country’s low- and middle-income population. However, there is also growing demand for sunflower oil, especially among more affluent middle-income consumers.
While e-commerce remained an insignificant distribution channel for cooking ingredients and meals in 2022, consumer interest in buying a wide range of products online is growing. In particular, the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic has encouraged affluent urban-dwellers to turn to e-commerce as a way of avoiding having to shop in crowded stores.
The forecast period is expected to see positive growth in overall sales of cooking ingredients and meals, with demand for edible oils set to remain under some pressure during the early stages of the forecast period due to the pressure on the global supply of these products as a result of the Ukraine conflict. Packaged spices is slated for a strong sales performance, with rising demand set to be driven by the growing numbers of middle-income women living in major urban areas that are in full-time work.
