Home improvement recorded the most dynamic performance in current value growth terms in 2020 due to the home seclusion trend as a result of the pandemic. With consumers spending longer periods of time at home, and financial concerns and restrictions limiting major renovation works, the French invested their time and energy into tackling small DIY projects that they may have previously postponed.
With the dominant distribution channel of home improvement and gardening stores forced to initially close when the March lockdown was introduced, leading retailers such as Leroy Merlin and Jardineries quickly adapted through their e-commerce sites, offering consumers click-and-collect options. Even though these stores were permitted to reopen fairly quickly after being deemed an essential service with a large proportion of the population remaining at home, click-and-collect offered a safe alternative to consumers who were cautious about browsing in stores with the virus in circulation.
Retailers’ private label lines, led by the likes of Leroy Merlin, continued to account for a significant proportion of value sales in home improvement in 2020, and this situation is set to continue over the forecast period. The main reason for this is that France’s major home and garden specialist retail chains have been able to leverage their very favourable positions with their direct suppliers to develop private label lines which represent extremely good value for money.
