Self-service cafeterias have been one of the categories worst hit by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. This is due to the fact that outlets in this category were not permitted to reopen following the initial implementation of the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020.
Self-service cafeterias is one of the few consumer foodservice categories that did not engage in any kind of activity following the initial lockdown restrictions in March 2020. The players in this category did not offer home delivery or takeaway services during the COVID-19 pandemic and did not set up any provisions for online ordering and did not reopen for eat-in consumption during 2020.
Leading food retailers in Peru, Cencosud and Supermercados Peruanos, are also leaders in self-service cafeterias. Both companies are strongly focused on developing their e-commerce sales and improving sales of their high margin products in their stores.
The recovery of self-service cafeterias is not projected to occur until the COVID-19 pandemic is under control and a vaccine programme is rolled out in Peru. The reopening of self-service cafeterias, due to the interactive style of service in these outlets, will be heavily dependent on the epidemiological situation in the country, and this is not expected to go away immediately at the beginning of the forecast period.
Given that the most popular feature of self-service cafeterias is that consumers are able to choose and serve themselves the items that they prefer, it is highly unlikely that home delivery or takeaway consumption will emerge in this category over the forecast period. Furthermore, takeaway services would not be necessary in this category due to the fact that these outlets are located in large grocery retailers which usually offer takeaway services themselves outside of their self-service cafeterias.
Over the forecast period, the number of outlets is expected to increase, but no new players are expected to emerge in the category as it stands. Given the limited demand for this category in Peru, this situation is unlikely to change over the coming years, with Metro and DeliVea set to continue leading sales.
