Eye care is largely seasonal, with sales increasing during the hay fever season – predominantly the spring, but also the summer. According to the Norwegian Asthma and Allergy Association (NAAF), approximately 20% of the Norwegian population (one million people) suffer from some sort of pollen allergy.
Standard eye care is expected to see more dynamic growth than allergy eye care in the forecast period. This is being driven by the fact that the lifestyles of many Norwegians centre around electronic screens.
Threats to the projected growth of standard eye care include new developments in the field of eye health. For example, eye laser technology and growing sales of contact lenses adjusted for digital screens could lead to decreasing demand for standard eye care products, as they would diminish the incidence of dry eyes.
Théa Nordic remained the clear leader in eye care in 2019. Théa Nordic offers several brands in standard eye care, including Viscotears, Oculac and the more recent addition Théaloz Duo, which was only launched in 2017.
Santen Norge AS continued to provide stiff competition in 2019 with it retaining second place in the rankings. The company offers its popular Oftagel brand in standard eye care, but its newer brands, Hyprosan and Lecrolyn Sine, which were only launched in 2017, both continued to see stronger growth in 2019.
Generics and private label are non-existent in eye care, which is also the case in nearly all OTC categories in Norway. Consumers have a rather high tolerance for spending on OTC products if there is the guarantee that the brand is effective.
