The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil and moves by cities and states across the country towards home working and schooling has seen many local consumers setting up home office or learning environments. With this, as well as consumers generally spending more time at home than usual, many consumers were using devices such as smartphones, TVs and computers/notebooks more frequently either to continue working/learning from home or for entertainment purposes.
At the same time, one of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken to contain its spread in Brazil was the deterioration of the economic situation. Store and business closures as well as higher unemployment rates have been negatively affecting consumer confidence.
The top two players Alcon and Allergan-Lok dominate eye care in Brazil, accounting for around three quarters of retail value sales of these products in 2020. The two companies have strong brands in their portfolios, such as Systane and Optive.
Over the coming years it is expected that smaller brands could continue to increase their participation, contributing to putting pressure on the sales of the leading players in the category and maintaining a move towards products with lower unit prices. The major variances in prices across eye care mean that consumers can often find similar products at much lower prices among the smaller players.
Over the coming years, the performances in eye care volume and value (at 2020 constant prices) sales are expected to gradually improve on the declines seen in 2020. However, consumers are expected to continue choosing carefully which brands to purchase, favouring those that offer the best cost-benefit ratio.
Dry weather will continue to play a role in the sales of eye care in Brazil. Sales can be driven by drier-than-usual weather in the country, with a number of recent years having seen such weather conditions.
