While the pollen count in 2020 was relatively high, the impact of this on demand for allergy eye care was softened by the home seclusion seen throughout the year. With consumers remaining indoors more than usual in 2020 they were less exposed to allergens and other irritants such as pollution that typically create demand for allergy eye care and as such sales declined in current value terms.
The growth of standard eye care remained stable in 2020 despite the challenges posed by COVID-19. On the one hand, with many consumers forced to work from home they have been less exposed to central air/air conditioning systems which are commonplace in offices and which are a significant cause of eye irritation.
Similar to the majority of OTC categories in Switzerland, eye care is led by multinationals which benefit from lower production and marketing costs that allow them to remain competitive. When self-treating eye complaints and discomfort Swiss consumers will typically choose brands which are considered safe and trustworthy and often these are the brands of the leading multinationals, which pharmacists also recommend.
Eye care is expected to continue registering steady growth over the forecast period in current value terms. This is expected to be supported by the trappings of modern living, which typically involve long hours in front of digital screens, environmental pollution and a growing incidence of allergies.
The ageing population in Switzerland is also set to support further growth in eye care as older consumers tend to be more prone to issues affecting the eyes. Many older demographics are keen to present a youthful appearance by wearing contact lenses instead of spectacles, which also increases the need for standard eye care products somewhat, as some consumers purchase well-known medical products rather than standard tear solutions for contact lenses in search of higher levels of efficacy and added benefits such as aloe.
There are not expected to be any significant changes in the competitive landscape over the forecast period. The leading multinationals are well-established and benefit from offering well-known and trusted brands.
