Growth in eye care in Hungary is driven mainly by demographic factors, such as the ageing population, health issues, such as the rising incidence of allergies and diabetes, and general lifestyle trends of the modern age, such as increased exposure to digital screens during both work and leisure time. These factors are also set to contribute to the stable growth expected in both standard and allergy eye care over the forecast period.
Due to constant exposure to computer and smartphone screens many consumers suffer from dry eyes which can cause tiredness and headaches, whilst air pollution, dust and other environmental factors can also irritate the eyes. This is creating increasing demand for standard eye care products such as artificial tears, eye ointments and eye washes which are used to lubricate the eyes.
A significant part of the Hungarian population suffer from the symptoms of allergies, mainly during the peak season from spring to autumn. The most aggressive allergens in Hungary are ragweed, mixed grass pollens, black wormwood and summer weed.
There were some changes within eye care at the end of the review period with some products being withdrawn from the market. GlaxoSmithKline combined its consumer health portfolio with Pfizer in 2019 and as part of this move some products disappeared from sale in Hungary, including its Cromosandoz brand of allergy eye care.
Domestic company Juvapharma Kft witnessed the most dynamic growth in current value terms in 2019 with its JutaVit Eye Clinic brand of standard eye care. The brand is targeted at sufferers of dry eyes with it claiming to provide fast-acting and long-lasting relief.
Due to the strong growth of standard eye care and the growing number of consumers experiencing dry and irritated eyes there is expected to be further new entrants and new product development over the forecast period. This follows the pattern seen at the end of the review period, with a number of new brands including Simply You Hungary Kft’s Ocutein Sensitive and Ewopharma Hungary Kft’s Optive both making strong entries, in addition to the aforementioned JutaVit Eye Clinic brand.
