Executive Summary

Oct 2019
PROSPECTS
Digital devices, pollution and ageing create a good backdrop for continued eye care growth

Although there are no official figures, it is believed that up to 30% of Colombians suffer from dry eye syndrome. This figure rises to more than 75% of people in the over-60 age group, although the incidence of dry eye is also increasing among the youth population.

Extended visual health entitlements in the social security system should also benefit OTC eye care

Beneficiaries of the General Health Social Security System are now entitled to a series of treatments and services that guarantee their visual health. This includes optometry and ophthalmology consultations, corrective lenses and visual health procedures.

Limited OTC ingredients for eye care

Hydroxypropyl, methylcellulose and propylene glycol continued to be the only approved ingredients for use in eye care in Colombia. These ingredients continued to be used in most products, such as artificial tears.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Foreign players lead eye care, but domestic companies exploit local knowledge

Eye care manufacturers continued to rely on word of mouth and recommendations from medical professionals, as these products are not heavily advertised in mass media due to their specialisation. Therefore, Laboratorios Alcon de Colombia (distributing for Novartis AG) has been able to consistently lead eye care, with its brands Systane and Tears Naturale, which are widely recognised among consumers and frequently recommended by specialists.

Poen Laboratory launches a new sodium hyaluronate ocular lubricant under the name Top Tear

Poen Laboratory has launched Top Tear, an ocular lubricant with sodium hyaluronate, one of the most effective compounds against dry eye syndrome. This aqueous solution can be compared with a sponge that retains water and has the ability to delay evaporation, which allows lubricating and natural moisturisation of the ocular surface.

Baush & Lomb’s new PreserVision eye vitamin and mineral supplement for dry eye

Baush & Lomb has launched an eye vitamin and mineral supplement for dry eye under the PreserVision line. PreserVision AREDS 2 is recommended for people with moderate to advanced age-related macular degeneration.
