Standard eye care experienced an upturn in demand in 2020 mainly linked to the home seclusion trend as a result of the pandemic-induced lockdown. In addition to general anxiety and fatigue from lack of sleep which can result in sore eyes, many consumers worked from home where possible, often on a computer, resulting in greater incidences of dry eye.
Beneficiaries of the General Health Social Security System are entitled to a series of treatments and services that guarantee their visual health, and are helping to gradually improve the awareness of eye care in the country. Nevertheless, the pandemic and subsequent lockdown also reduced the likelihood of consumers visiting ophthalmologist appointments due to limited opening hours.
The competitive landscape of eye care in Colombia remained fairly consolidated amongst three players in 2020. Eye care manufacturers tend to rely on word of mouth and recommendations from medical professionals, as these products are not heavily advertised in mass media due to their specialisation.
A number of factors will continue to support stable demand for eye care over the forecast period, including the increasing proportion of the population over 60 years of age, environmental pollution, air conditioning, and the rising incidence of dry eye increasing amongst younger generations due to the extensive use of computers, smartphones, televisions and other digital screens.
To further expand their consumer reach, eye care players and health institutions continue to educate consumers about the importance of proper care over their eye health, as they address a lack of prevention culture due to limited care or awareness which can lead to more serious problems. Despite the offer of free eye examinations for lower-income consumers, the challenge is to ensure that they are attended (virus permitting) and if a treatment is initiated that it is regularly adhered to.
The change in reading and working habits prompting a greater move towards digital devices, is generating the need to protect one’s eyes from a screen’s glare, particularly blue light emitted from computers. Many ophthalmologists are increasingly recommending that wearers of spectacles opt for a special coating on the lenses which can help reduce the impact of blue light on the eyes.
