Health and wellness trends continue to influence soft drink dynamics in China. After a sharp decline in 2020, the soft drinks industry posted a healthy growth rate in 2021, with low-calorie carbonates and bottled water products performing well.
As Chinese consumers are trying to cut down on sugar intake in their daily routine, small packs are proving more popular with them. Pack sizes of 600ml or smaller dominate the soft drinks packaging market, with the 500ml size very popular, but also 550ml, 555ml, 250ml, 350ml, 600ml and 310ml.
Players in the soft drinks packaging industry are heavily investing in PET bottles and metal beverage cans in order to promote a zero-waste ecosystem and help in the development of a circular economy. Brand owners are partnering with courier and e-commerce services to enable consumers to return their PET bottles and aluminium beverage cans, which can then be recycled and reused.
PET bottles will continue to be the dominant packaging solution for the soft drinks industry in the Chinese market, with its share, already at 80% at the end of the review period, expected to edge up slightly over the forecast period as PET bottles growth outpaces the overall soft drinks packaging performance. However, liquid cartons are expected to lose share over the forecast period as they are comparatively costly and can be easily replaced by rPET bottles, which are being increasingly supported by all the leading brands.
Although sustainability concerns took a backseat to the hygiene and protective aspects of packaging materials when the pandemic hit China in 2020, they have still remained to the fore and brands are expected to continue to move towards recyclable and recycled plastic, such as rPET, over the forecast period. Indeed, investment in sustainability and a circular economy is expected to be a primary focus for major brands in the coming years.
