While there was a strong rebound in foodservice packaging unit volumes in the soft drinks industry in the Netherlands in 2021, it was not enough to offset the major decline seen in 2020, given the foodservice performance in 2021 was impacted by the ongoing necessity for periods of lockdown in this year, as well as other COVID-19 restrictions that still continued to disrupt consumers’ lifestyles. As a result, while foodservice unit volumes of key pack types such as glass bottles, PET bottles and metal beverage cans posted a strong recovery in 2021, this was not the full recovery that many had hoped for, with pre-pandemic sales levels not currently expected to be reached again in the foodservice channel until 2024.
Sustainability has remained a vital topic among soft drinks players in the Netherlands. For example, since March 2021, Coca-Cola’s Fuze Tea's carton packs in the Netherlands have been produced more sustainably by using 100% responsibly sourced materials that are 95% linked to plant-based raw materials.
In carbonates, the largest soft drinks category in the Netherlands, there has been a trend towards greater usage of metal beverage cans in place of PET bottles in terms of retail channel unit volumes. After two years of declining unit volumes in 2019 and 2020, PET bottles recorded positive growth in the retail channel in carbonates in 2021, but were still underperforming metal beverage cans, which is expected to continue in the coming years.
The EU’s new Plastic Tax was introduced from 1 January 2021 as part of the EU recovery package necessitated by EU spending as a result of COVID-19. From this date, industry players’ contributions will be calculated by the weight of non-recycled plastic packaging waste, at a uniform rate of EUR0.
Over the forecast period, foodservice packaging volumes for soft drinks are expected to gradually recover. However, this recovery is expected to be slow.
