Sustainability is a major driver of innovation across soft drinks, with all major companies looking to introduce or expand their use of recyclable packaging and to use an increasing percentage of recycled material in PET bottles. Coca Cola’s World Without Waste strategy has been applied in Spain, with 100% of the company’s packaging being recyclable by the end of the review period, 23% recycled PET (rPET) used in its bottles and more than 70% of its packaging having been recycled.
In response to growing concerns over the use of plastic, there have been some attempts to replace PET bottles with other types of packaging. Ocean 52 for example launched still mineral water in metal beverage cans in April 2019, while Auara Empresa Social launched slim 330ml metal beverage cans in carbonated mineral water in May 2019.
Growing demand for smaller packaging continues to be seen, with this linked to greater on-the-go consumption, consumers’ busier lifestyles and the fact that smaller packs are easier to carry. Smaller formats are also gaining traction due to the increasing number of smaller households consisting of single people or couples.
