The Spanish soft drinks packaging market saw a strong recovery in foodservice unit volumes in 2021, following the steep decline seen in 2020, when COVID-19 first arrived in the country. Spain saw excellent progress in its vaccination programme, with 90% of the adults in the country having been vaccinated against COVID-19 in 2021.
Still bottled water, which is the largest category in soft drinks in Spain, saw a decline in larger pack sizes of PET bottles in 2021, after having seen spectacular growth in 2020 due to the stockpiling trend. As a result, most of the larger pack sizes of PET bottles of one litre or more were recording declining sales in 2021, after having seen, at times, very strong unit volume growth in 2020.
Sustainability has retained its importance in soft drinks, especially in the industry’s packaging. Starting in May 2021, CocaCola Espana, along with CocaCola European Partners, began an 11-week trial in Spain to introduce and test tethered (or attached) caps on plastic bottles on select soft drinks brands.
Effective 1 January 2021, the EU’s new Plastic Tax was introduced in Spain as part of the EU recovery package necessitated by EU spending due to the costs associated with COVID-19. From 1 January 2021, industry players’ contributions will be calculated by the weight of non-recycled plastic packaging waste at a uniform rate of EUR0.
Over the forecast period, smaller pack sizes are expected to return to seeing increasing demand among Spanish consumers in the soft drinks industry. The stockpiling seen at the start of the pandemic in 2020 is now pretty much a thing of the past, while increasing health awareness will see more consumers resort to smaller pack sizes for beverages such as carbonates, which are largely seen as unhealthy, in a bid to reduce their overall sugar consumption.
