In 2021, soft drinks packaging returned to seeing positive growth in Singapore, following the decline experienced in 2020, when the pandemic resulted in a sharp fall in foodservice sales. Retail sales managed to record modest unit volume growth in 2020, with a further modest sales increase seen in 2021.
To continually excite consumers, besides launching new variants, RTD tea players are also taking the opportunity to be innovative in terms of packaging. For instance, Yeo Hiap Seng launched limited edition cans of its chrysanthemum variant which is combined with an augmented reality filter.
Sustainability continues to be actively promoted by bottled water brands, which are switching away from single-use PET bottles as they are perceived to be harmful to the environment. As consumers become increasingly environmentally-conscious in terms of their attitudes and lifestyles, bottled water manufacturers are looking to strengthen their positions as sustainable partners, shifting away from plastic packaging.
Metal beverage cans and PET bottles will continue to dominate soft drinks packaging over the forecast period. Usage of both pack types will continue to grow over the forecast period, although both will take some time to return to their pre-pandemic sales levels.
Sustainable pack types have a positive market outlook as consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of waste packaging material. Coca-Cola is leading the way in this regard, with its World Without Waste environmental programme.
