Total unit volumes saw a marked decline in 2020, after having recorded positive, albeit consistently slowing, growth over the earlier years of the review period. The foodservice channel registered a steep sales decline in 2020, although the retail channel was also seeing falling unit volumes.
The recovery of still bottled water and still RTD tea sales at a category level were contributing to the recovery of PET bottles in 2021, following the declines seen when COVID-19 hit Hong Kong in 2020. PET bottles is expected to see strong growth in several areas of soft drinks packaging over the forecast period, owing to lightweight nature, portability and ease of use of PET packaging.
Label-free packaging is something more and more manufacturers are adopting. This includes using no labels at all or using non-plastic labels that do not hinder recyclability.
Cola carbonates are expected to decline over the forecast period, as consumers are consciously avoiding sugary drinks due to health concerns. While this could hit the overall importance of metal beverage cans, the most popular pack type in cola carbonates, there is also expected to be a shift from PET bottles to metal beverage cans in cola carbonates as the latter are seen as being more easily recyclable, which will help metal beverage cans offset some of the losses expected from the declining sales of overall cola carbonates.
The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has set out a Waste Blueprint for Hong Kong, aimed at reducing waste impact and boosting recycling. This is likely to impact how companies package their products, as the blueprint aims to shift more responsibility on to manufacturers to ensure that their products are recyclable.
