The usage of glass bottles has been increasing in carbonated bottled water, with this trend expected to continue to be seen over the forecast period. This is being driven by rising sales of carbonated bottled water at the expense of soft drinks that contain sugar, as consumers look to reduce their sugar intake and instead try to drink more water for better hydration and this product’s overall health benefits.
Energy drinks are helping to boost the usage of metal beverage cans in the Polish soft drinks market, with this pack type having previously been dominated by cola and non-cola carbonates. With the rising awareness of cola and non-cola carbonates being potentially harmful to the health if consumed in large quantities, this has been resulting in reduced consumption of cola and non-cola carbonates.
There has been increasing usage of QR codes on soft drinks packaging. This was seen, for example, in the “Halloween Lottery” digital campaign in which Coca-Cola was selling its Fanta brand drinks with a QR code on the PET bottle packaging, which could then be used to win prizes in the lottery.
In early 2022, Poland launched a formalised deposit return scheme that covers PET bottles with a volume of up to three litres and glass bottles of up to 1.5 litres.
The introduction of the sugar tax in early 2021 led to a reduction in sales of soft drinks by a sixth in the first five months. This particularly impacted categories with less than 20% juice content, such as carbonates, concentrates, RTD tea and most juice drinks.
