After the huge unit volume decline in soft drinks foodservice packaging in 2020 due to the measures implemented to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus, most pack types recorded a return to positive growth in 2021. This included glass bottles, which were heavily impacted due to lockdown restrictions and temporary foodservice closures in 2020, but were recording increasing sales in 2021.
During the pandemic, energy drinks and RTD coffee have benefited from demand from people staying at home to work or study who needed an extra boost of energy to enhance concentration. Many consumers also consume such drinks while playing computer and video games, which was an increasing trend during the pandemic.
In the retail channel, larger pack sizes continued to benefit from consumer demand for value for money and also the preference to stockpile in order to minimise shopping trips during the first half of 2021. This benefitted larger pack sizes of metal beverage cans in the soft drinks market, with sizes such as 355ml and 473ml continuing to see rapid growth.
Over the forecast period, metal beverage cans are expected to see strong growth in the soft drinks industry, outperforming PET bottles across both the retail and foodservice channels. In carbonates, metal beverage cans are expected to gain share at the expense of PET bottles.
Turkey’s zero-waste project has a stated goal of achieving a recycling rate of 35% by 2023, in a move that is claimed could create 100,000 jobs and generate annual revenues of almost USD3 billion. This project is aimed at being implemented nationwide by 2023 as the Turkish government looks to reduce the application of single-use plastic, which is harmful to the environment.
