The soft drinks packaging industry saw a recovery in unit volume sales in 2021, after the measures implemented to try and contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus in 2020 had resulted in a marked decline in this year. As a result of consumers gradually spending longer periods of time outside their homes, particularly in the second half of 2021, on-trade packaging volumes of soft drinks in France posted a notable recovery in 2021.
Greater mobility in the second half of 2021 and the gradual return of employees and white-collar workers to the office benefited the recovery of on-the-go pack sizes of soft drinks. Pack sizes such as 200ml, 250ml, 330ml and 500ml were therefore recording positive growth in 2021 in key soft drink categories such as still bottled water and carbonates.
A trend towards consumers leading more active lifestyles has supported development in soft drinks packaging that suits on-the-go purposes. An example of this was the French launch, in 2021, by SIG of its range of carton packaging known as combismile under the brand Volvic.
Effective from 1 January 2021, the new “plastic tax” was introduced by the EU as part of the EU recovery package necessitated by spending across the EU as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. From 1 January 2021, an industry player’s contribution under the new tax was calculated by the weight of non-recycled plastic packaging waste, with a uniform rate of EUR0.
Still bottled water is the largest category in soft drinks packaging in France and is dominated by PET bottles in terms of pack type. Among the new developments to meet rising concerns with regard to the sustainability of this type of packaging have been the 2021 launches of the Vittel GO system and the Vittel Hybrid bottle.
