The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs is planning to introduce a deposit scheme for plastic bottles and drinks cans. This system works with small cash deposits placed on single-use plastic bottles and containers that will serve as an incentive for people to recycle their drinks bottles and cans, thus reducing litter and plastic pollution.
The UK’s Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT), which came into effect from 1 April 2022, is payable by manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging containing less than 30% recycled plastic content at a rate of GBP200 per metric tonne. As a result, continued development in sustainable plastic packaging, such as rPET, is expected to continue to be seen in the coming years as manufacturers make further efforts to invest in a circular economy model and recycled plastic, so that industry players in the soft drinks market can minimise their PPT burden.
