With the gradual removal in 2021 of social restrictions that had been implemented during 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, sales of smaller pack sizes began to improve as on-the-go consumption returned to normal levels. Furthermore, after declining sharply in 2020, foodservice sales of both soft drinks and their packaging, like PET bottles, glass bottles and metal beverage cans, rebounded strongly in 2021, with growth expected to be strong in 2022 as well and then continuing to be positive in the remaining years of the forecast period.
PET bottles recorded strong growth in 2021, with major companies such as Coca-Cola and PepsiCo pushing this pack type in the Argentinian soft drinks market. With rPET becoming more prevalent, this pack style aligns with such players’, as well as consumers’, environmental goals.
The sales of returnable glass bottles were notably impacted by health and hygiene concerns when the pandemic hit the country in 2020. Consumers were also trying to minimise their number of trips to supermarkets and other grocery stores, also leading shoppers to prefer one-way packaging, such as PET bottles and metal beverage cans, meaning that they were bought in higher proportions.
The energy drinks category recorded dynamic growth in 2021, with further heathy growth rates expected over the forecast period. This will help drive growth of metal beverage cans in the coming years, given this is the main pack type for energy drinks.
The economic impact of the pandemic on disposable incomes has been extreme, coming in the wake of an ongoing recession in Argentina, and has seen price sensitivity increasing across the country, with consumers changing their purchasing habits to favour bigger-volume formats in bottled water. Over the review period, Argentina’s leading bottled water players were developing larger pack sizes, for example Aguas Danone de Argentina and the private label Coto switched from a 6-litre pack to 6.
