Soft drinks sales rebounded quickly in 2021 as Thailand recovered from the economic shock caused by COVID-19. Bottled water continued to dominate unit volume sales of soft drinks, which is helping to drive demand for PET bottles, the dominant pack type in bottled water.
Mid-size packs remain widely popular in Thailand owing to two of the most important categories: bottled water and carbonates. The 500ml and 600ml packs account for almost 40% of total soft drinks unit volume packaging, with PET bottles and glass bottles widely available in these pack sizes.
Thailand has become one of the pilot countries for various global fmcg conglomerates, such as Coca-Cola, as brand owners look to develop sustainable and eco-friendly innovations. Coca-Cola has adopted a unique consumer engagement marketing campaign in which it is rolling out a “Recycle Me” message on its package labels across all of its carbonated soft drinks brands.
PET bottles will remain the leading pack type and main driver of growth within rigid plastic packaging, helped by its dominance in bottled water. PET bottles benefit from being durable, lightweight and easy to use, therefore having strong appeal among industry players and consumers.
Health and wellness remains a key driver of demand in soft drinks. The pandemic has served to deepen local consumer interest in health and wellness, while the excise tax on sugar, which was introduced over the review period, and is due to rise again in October 2022, has drawn the attention of local consumers to the high sugar content of many soft drinks, particularly carbonates, energy drinks and sports drinks.
