Coca-Cola launched a trial run to test consumer behaviour in terms of beverage refills. The refillable on-the-go drinks solutions pilot is taking place at a BPX convenience store in Stockholm using beverage containers from Glacial.
Post COVID-19, there has been a return to premiumisation in packaging, with consumers preferring thinner aluminium metal beverage cans in cola carbonates. Metal beverage cans are perceived to have less packaging material and are more elegant and grip-friendly.
Glass bottles witnessed a dip in demand in 2020 due to limited on-trade consumption and demand for easy-to-transport pack types such as PET bottles. Glass bottle packaging is often considered premium and primarily preferred in juice, liquid concentrates and carbonates, especially tonic water and Julmust, a traditional Swedish drink that is often consumed around Christmas time.
Sweden updated its recycling legislation in late 2021, bringing it closer into line with the EU’s Single-Use Plastics Directive. The changes to the legislation on producer responsibility for packaging (2018:1462) have been gradually introduced since the start of 2022.
Metal beverage cans are expected to continue becoming increasingly popular in cola carbonates. The trend is down to consumers preferring smaller pack sizes in multipacks of cola carbonates in order to limit their sugar intake through the drink.
