Demand for soft drinks in 2021 continued to grow, driven in particular by certain categories such as bottled water and RTD tea, as South Koreans are very particular about their hydration drinks. A reflection of this trend can be observed in the demand for packaging materials, with PET bottles the main pack type in this industry.
When it comes to considering new product development, the first focus of soft drinks players is sustainability. In the wake of the revised Waste Control Act, implemented at the end of 2020, which states that labels on packaging must be removed when disposing of plastic bottles, in line with Ministry of the Environment guidelines, label-free packaging emerged as one of the most visible trends in 2021.
As consumers spent more time at home due to social distancing and remote working, large-volume RTD coffee gained popularity. Previously, 300ml was considered to be a large format for RTD coffee, but 2021 saw the introduction of super-large volume variants, which are almost family-size packaging.
PET bottles are expected to remain the main packaging type in soft drinks in South Korea, with brand owners focusing on achieving 100% rPET manufacturing units. Moreover, after the introduction of label-free bottles, this packaging type has stood out as being one of the most sustainable solutions.
The presence of e-commerce is expected to grow in the soft drink supply chain dynamics as it provides convenience to consumers and helps players offer lower prices. Brands should be aligning their manufacturing strategy and marketing style accordingly.
