The second wave of COVID-19 hit India in mid-March 2021, and continued through until May. Instead of a nationwide lockdown, most of the state governments in the country implemented localised lockdowns to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Lockdown in 2021 benefited retail sales of soft drinks in India, helping pack types such as PET bottles record notable growth in this year. Recovery in PET bottle packaging unit volumes was largely attributable to the rebound in bottled water sales, with this being the largest category in soft drinks in India, due, in large part, to the lack of access to clean drinking water for many people across the country.
Brick liquid cartons continued to see notable growth in the retail channel in 2021, primarily driven by strong growth in juice products, in which brick liquid cartons are prevalent. There have also been some packaging innovations involving brick liquid cartons in order to give a more natural aesthetic.
Government regulation regarding the usage of single-use plastic saw new developments in August 2021 in the form of the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, which call for the prohibition of 20 identified single-use plastic items by July 2022. However, the impact of these new regulations on soft drinks could be more limited than initially thought, as it does net yet include a ban on single-use plastic bottles for food and water.
Given that new packaging legislation does not seem to have any immediate repercussions on the usage of plastic bottles, the growth prospects for PET bottles in soft drinks packaging in India continue to be strong. Smaller pack sizes within PET bottles are expected to see healthier growth prospects, driven by the growing popularity of smaller sizes of PET bottles, such as 250ml, which caters to consumer demand for affordability while also having a lower sugar and calorie content by virtue of being a smaller quantity.
