Soft Drinks Packaging in
India

Country Report

Executive Summary

Apr 2019
PROSPECTS
Rising demand for bottled water supports the dominant position of PET bottles

Health awareness is rising among Indian consumers and this is having a major impact on the development of soft drinks packaging. Specifically, with virtually all bottled water in the country packaged in PET bottles, the rising demand for bottled water is underpinning the ongoing dominance of PET in overall soft drinks packaging.

Liquid cartons expanding, underpinned by rising demand for juice and sports drinks

Liquid cartons continues to register robust growth and this is for two main reasons: rising demand for juice among a consumer base that is increasingly interested in healthy soft drinks; and the wider use of this pack type in the emerging category of sports drinks. Liquid cartons remains the third most common pack type in soft drinks, after PET bottles and glass bottles and continued to register strong growth in 2018 as sales of juice continued to benefit from the previous introduction of taxes on unhealthy soft drinks, making juice a more affordable and attractive option.

Slowing demand for carbonates continues to compromise growth in glass and metal

The slowing of sales growth in carbonates continues to have a significant impact on soft drinks packaging trends. In particular, the performances of glass bottles and metal beverage cans are being compromised by flagging sales of carbonates, the dominant soft drinks product category for each of these pack types.
