Colombia continued to crack down on the use of single-use plastics in 2022 by introducing the Tax on Single-Use Plastics Used to Package or Pack Goods (abbreviated to IPUU in Spanish) as part of Law 2277 of 2022. This tax will likely have a considerable impact on the country’s beverage market, which accounts for 17% of the country’s total production of packaging material.
In 2022, Colombia’s Congress voted to introduce a tax on high-calorie foodstuffs, including sugary beverages, effective from July 2023. The tax will apply across all categories of the soft drinks market.
