The unit volumes of cola carbonates, in particular, and still bottled water recorded strong rebounds in 2021, after a drop in usage in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with non-cola carbonates also seeing stronger sales growth in 2021 than a year earlier. PET bottles and glass bottles, which are the most popular pack types for these categories, also recovered in 2021, or, in the case of PET bottles, saw stronger year-on-year growth.
After recording declining sales in 2020, metal beverage cans saw a strong rebound in 2021, with unit volumes registering a sharp increase. They are now increasing their share, which is expected to continue over the forecast period.
The health and wellness trend has increasingly been driving industry players to offer sugar-free and reduced-sugar options in an effort to leverage the increasing interest in healthy beverages among the Colombian population. This is likely to be given further impetus with new labelling regulations.
The Colombian government unveiled its National Plan for the Sustainable Management of Single-Use Plastics on 3 June 2021. The strategy was developed in cooperation with a number of sectors of industry in the country as part of a national timetable for sustainable plastic management, which is being led by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.
The fact that children form a significant proportion of the core consumer base for concentrates is likely to support demand for reduced-sugar and sugar-free options in this category as many Colombian parents harbour grave concerns over childhood obesity and the impact that this can have on their children’s physical and cognitive development and their long-term health outcomes throughout their lives. Furthermore, the recently introduced packaging regulations that require all soft drinks manufacturers to clearly print sugar levels on the front of packaging should also be taken into consideration here as this will result in a consumer base that is more informed about the sugar levels in the various product they consume, giving concentrates brands far more incentives to reduce sugar levels and offer products that are healthier overall.
